Finding the percent: a worked example (What percent of 48 is 12?)
- Write it as a fraction: 12/48.
- Simplify: 12/48 = 1/4.
- 1/4 = 25%, so 12 is 25% of 48.
How to use it at home and in class
At home
Use test scores as practice: 18 out of 20 on a spelling test is what percent? Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.
In class
Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
Mistakes to watch for
- Putting the numbers the wrong way round, so 48/12.
- Forgetting to multiply the decimal by 100.
What to practice before and after finding the percent
- Before: percent of a number. If this sheet is a struggle, go back a step.
- After: percent change, once this one is mostly right.
- Learn it first: the finding the percent lesson.
