Even and odd numbers: a worked example (Is 47 even or odd?)
- Look at the ones digit: 7.
- 7 is odd, because 7 objects make 3 pairs with 1 left over.
- So 47 is odd.
How to use it at home and in class
At home
Use counters: make pairs and see whether one is left over. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.
In class
Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
Mistakes to watch for
- Looking at the tens digit instead of the ones digit.
- Thinking 0 is neither even nor odd. It is even.
What to practice before and after even and odd numbers
- Before: skip counting. If this sheet is a struggle, go back a step.
- After: comparing numbers, once this one is mostly right.
- Learn it first: the even and odd numbers lesson and the odd and even numbers chart.
