Mean, median, mode and range: a worked example (4, 7, 7, 9, 13)
- Mean: add them (40) and divide by 5, which gives 8. Median: the middle value is 7.
- Mode: the most common value is 7.
- Range: biggest minus smallest, 13 − 4 = 9.
How to use it at home and in class
At home
Sort the numbers from smallest to largest before anything else. Ten problems a day works better than a whole sheet at once. Mark them together with the answer key, then ask your child to explain one they got wrong: finding the mistake themselves is where the learning happens.
In class
Use the first row as a warm-up, a full page for independent practice, or five questions as an exit ticket. For a retake or a second group, make a new version with the test maker so every child gets different numbers.
Mistakes to watch for
- Finding the median without putting the numbers in order first.
- Confusing mean and median.
What to practice before and after mean, median, mode and range
- Before: solving equations. If this sheet is a struggle, go back a step.
- Learn it first: the grades 6–8 guide and the data and graphs chart.
