How to learn multiplication, in order
Multiplication builds in a clear sequence, and skipping ahead usually backfires. Begin with the Times Tables and move to Multiplication Facts once the tables feel comfortable mixed up. 2-Digit × 1-Digit is the gateway into multi-digit work, followed by 2-Digit × 2-Digit and Multi-Digit in grade 5. The By 10, 100, 1000 shortcut fits in anywhere once the basic facts are known — it makes the bigger methods faster.
Multiplication by grade
Knowing where a skill sits helps you pick the right starting point:
- Grade 3: the meaning of multiplication (equal groups and arrays), and the times tables to 10–12.
- Grade 4: multiplying 2- and 3-digit numbers by a single digit, and the ×10/100/1000 shortcut.
- Grade 5: full multi-digit long multiplication, including 2-digit × 2-digit and beyond.
Where should my child start?
If the times tables aren’t automatic yet, that’s the first job — nearly every later method depends on instant recall of the facts, and a child who is still counting them up will get bogged down in long multiplication. If the facts are solid but multi-digit work is shaky, start with 2-digit × 1-digit and make sure the carrying and place-value lining-up are clean before moving on. Common mistakes, and how to help
Three errors account for most lost marks. Counting instead of recalling facts — fixed only by short, daily practice until the answer is instant. Place-value slips in long multiplication, usually forgetting to shift the second row one place to the left; grid paper and a quick check that each row lines up under the right column prevents these. And carrying errors — writing the carried digit down and crossing it off once used keeps it from being forgotten or added twice. None of these are about being “bad at math”; they’re procedure habits that practice makes automatic.
