Practice all of place value

This mixed review alternates rounding and comparing questions so both skills stay sharp.

Why place value matters

Place value — understanding that the 7 in 70 means seven tens — is the foundation under almost everything else: regrouping in addition, lining up columns in multiplication, and reading decimals later. Comparing Numbers builds the sense of size, and Rounding uses place value to estimate.

By grade

  • Grade 2: comparing two- and three-digit numbers with <, > and =.
  • Grades 3–4: rounding to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand.

Common mistakes, and how to help

For comparing, children often look at how many digits a number has rather than the leading place — a quick “which is longer, then which leading digit is bigger” check helps. For rounding, the usual slip is rounding the wrong digit; underline the place you’re rounding to and look only at the digit just to its right.

Frequently asked questions

Is the place value practice free?

Yes — all practice and worksheets are free, no sign-up, and no ads in the practice.

What is place value?

The value a digit has because of its position — in 348, the 3 means three hundreds, the 4 means four tens, and the 8 means eight ones.

How do you round a number?

Look at the digit just right of the place you’re rounding to. If it’s 5 or more, round up; if it’s less than 5, round down.

What do the <, > and = signs mean?

Less than, greater than, and equal to. The open side of < or > always faces the larger number.

What grade is rounding taught in?

Rounding to tens and hundreds starts in grade 3 and extends to larger numbers in grade 4.

Can I print place value worksheets?

Yes — each skill page has a print button for a fresh 20-question sheet with an answer key.
