How division facts relate to multiplication
Every division fact is a multiplication fact turned around. If you know 6 × 7 = 42, then you already know 42 ÷ 6 = 7 and 42 ÷ 7 = 6. That is the fastest route to division fluency: lean on the times tables a child already has.
- Ask “what times the divisor gives this number?”
- For 56 ÷ 8, think “8 times what is 56?” — the answer is 7.
- If the tables are shaky, practise those first; division gets easy the moment they are solid.

Because division is the tables in reverse, the quickest win is solid multiplication recall — if a child hesitates on division, it is almost always the underlying times-table fact that is slow. Practise the fact families together (6×7, 7×6, 42÷6, 42÷7) so the link becomes automatic.
