The divisibility rules worth knowing

Divisibility rules are quick checks that tell you whether one number divides evenly into another — without actually dividing. They are a huge help for simplifying fractions and finding factors.

  • 2: the number ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 (it is even).
  • 5: it ends in 0 or 5.
  • 10: it ends in 0.
  • 3: the digits add up to a multiple of 3.
  • 9: the digits add up to a multiple of 9.
  • 6: it passes both the 2 rule and the 3 rule.

Worked examples

Using the rule for 3Is 414 divisible by 3? Digits: 4 + 1 + 4 = 9, and 9 is a multiple of 3 — so Yes.
Using the rule for 5Is 327 divisible by 5? It ends in 7, not 0 or 5 — so No.

Tips & common mistakes

These rules turn a division problem into a quick glance. The digit-sum rules (for 3 and 9) surprise kids the most — it is worth practising those until the trick feels natural. Tap Yes or No for each number.

  • Forgetting that 6 needs both the 2 and 3 rules to pass.
  • Adding the digits wrong on the 3 and 9 checks.
  • Assuming “ends in an even digit” works for 4 — the rule for 4 is about the last two digits.

What are divisibility rules?

Quick tests that tell you if a number divides evenly by another without doing the division — for example, a number is divisible by 5 if it ends in 0 or 5.

What is the rule for 3?

Add up the digits. If that total is a multiple of 3, the whole number is divisible by 3. For 414: 4+1+4 = 9, so yes.
