The three big measures

These three numbers summarise a data set in different ways.

  1. Mean (average): add all the values and divide by how many there are.
  2. Median: the middle value when the numbers are put in order.
  3. Range: the largest value minus the smallest.

Worked examples

MeanFor 4, 8, 6, 2: sum is 20, divided by 4 values = 5.
MedianFor 3, 9, 5 in order (3, 5, 9), the middle value is 5.

Tips & common mistakes

  • Finding the median without sorting the numbers first.
  • Dividing by the wrong count when finding the mean.
  • Confusing range (a spread) with mean (a centre).

Frequently asked questions

What is the mean?

The average — add all the values and divide by how many there are.

What is the median?

The middle value once the numbers are in order. With an even count, it’s the average of the two middle values.

What is the range?

The difference between the largest and smallest values — it measures how spread out the data is.

What’s the difference between mean and median?

Both describe the centre, but the mean is the balancing average while the median is literally the middle value. The median is less affected by extreme values.
